Instructions for Use of Pinworm Paddle

  1.  The specimen should be collected early in the morning, before arising from bed.
  2. Do not wash the rectal area before collecting the specimen. Do not apply any powder or ointment to the area the evening before the collection.
  3. Remove the paddle from the sleeve. Spread the cheeks of the buttocks apart gently. DO NOT INSERT THE PADDLE INTO THE RECTUM. Press the sticky portion of the paddle against several regions of the perianal area. If you visually see worms, press the paddle against them.
  4. Place the paddle back into the plastic sleeve and label the paddle with A. the patient's name, and B. the date the specimen was collected.
  6. Bring specimen to the Mt. Auburn Hospital Lab the same day the specimen is collected.
  7. If you have any questions, please call the microbiology department between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
