Post Concussion

Post Concussion Protocol for Return to Play:  

Step 1: No activity, complete rest, once asymptomatic proceed to Step 2. 

Step 2: Light aerobic exercise such as walking or stationary biking, no resistance training. 

Step 3: Sport specific exercise - for example, skating in hockey or running in soccer; progressive addition of resistance training at Steps 3 or 4. 

Step 4: Non contact training drills.

Step 5: Full contact training after medical clearance.

Step 6: Game play.

•    If symptoms occur during any of these steps you must go back to the step before and try to progress again in 24 hours. 
•    At least 24 hours is recommended between advancing to the next step. 
•    An additional consideration in return to play is that concussed athletes should not only be symptom free but should not be taking any medication (i.e. Tylenol, Ibuprofen) that may modify symptoms of concussion. 
•    Contact your physician for persistence of symptoms and inability to advance along the steps to game play.
